Book Launch and Reading for Talking Hawaii’s Story

Talking StoryA book launch and reading for Talking Hawai‘i’s Story: Oral Histories of an Island People, edited by Michi Kodama-Nishimoto, Warren S. Nishimoto, and Cynthia A. Oshiro, is scheduled for Sunday, October 18, 2009, 2:00-3:30 pm, at the School of Architecture Auditorium, University of Hawai‘i, Mānoa. The reading will be directed and produced by Aloha Shorts. Light refreshments and free on-campus parking will be available.

This event is sponsored by the Center for Oral History, the Center for Biographical Research, and the Hawai‘i Council for the Humanities. UH Press Authors Host Weekly Radio Show

Yano & Tanabe
Christine Yano and George Tanabe, Jr., are the hosts of Thinking Out Loud, a weekly radio program presented by the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai‘i (JCCH). Thinking Out Loud airs every Monday, 6:30-7:30 pm, on KZOO-AM 1210, Hawai‘i’s only Japanese-language radio station.

Each week Yano and Tanabe explore an issue of concern to the Japanese American and broader community in Hawai’i. Listeners are encouraged to call in or email questions and comments. Past guests have included Warren Nishimoto on oral history and UH Press’ very own Norman Kaneshiro on Okinawan performing arts. Once a month Thinking Out Loud presents the JCCH Book Club, hosted by Willa Jane Tanabe, who leads a lively discussion with a special guest and the audience on a book of the month.

Eleanor Nordyke at Barnes & Noble, June 28


Eleanor Nordyke, author and publisher of Pacific Images: Views from Captain Cook’s Third Voyage, Second Edition, will appear at Barnes & Noble, Kahala Mall, on Sunday, June 28, 1:00–2:00 p.m., to sign the newly released second edition of her acclaimed work. She will show a DVD on the topic and display large reproductions of some of the engravings in the book. Pacific Images is distributed by University of Hawai‘i Press.

Carlos Andrade at Limahuli Garden

Limahuli Garden and Preserve in Ha‘ena is offering for the first time ever a moonlight event. “Mo‘olelo Under the Moon,” a new program, kicks off on Saturday, June 6, 7:30-9 p.m. This outdoor series will offer the rare opportunity to learn of Kaua‘i’s cultural history while experiencing the majesty of Limahuli at night. The first talk features Carlos Andrade, who will share some of the stories from his recent book Ha‘ena: Through the Eyes of the Ancestors.
