PRIVACY POLICIES

Customers: The University of Hawai‘i Press respects the privacy of visitors to our online storefront. We collect no information about you except what you personally supply by filling out forms to make purchases or to sign up for email notifications.

All credit card information is handled by certified secure servers that encrypt transmissions to and from customers. We do not make information you’ve provided on this website available to third parties for any reason other than to fulfill your online order.

Email subscribers: We send online customers automatic email notifications related to their online order fulfillment or order status. These are customer service functions of our website that may not be disabled, and we encourage customers to keep a copy of their emailed receipt for reference.

Visitors to our website may also subscribe to our mailing list to receive UH Press news and updates. We do not share our mailing list with other companies for any reason. If you wish to unsubscribe from our mailing list, please click here to update your subscription preferences.

Authors and Editors: We respect the privacy of our authors and editors by not sharing their personal contact information without receiving their permission to do so. CREDIT CARD AND PAYMENT POLICIES

We only accept VISA, MasterCard, and Discover credit cards for online payment. We’re sorry, but the University of Hawai’i System does not accept American Express. Your online order will not be processed without credit card authorization. Prepayment is required for shipping.

We do not accept cash payments by mail. For mail orders, please send us a U.S. money order or check with a completed Mail Order Form and allow 4 weeks for processing.


RETURN AND EXCHANGE POLICIES*

For Individual Customers

Books and other retail items purchased from this website may be returned within 14 days of purchase with original receipt.

Original receipt is required for all refunds and exchanges, and merchandise must be in original condition (including shrink-wrapped items and digital access codes). Please provide your order number and notify Customer Service prior to returning any merchandise. Damaged merchandise must be reported within 7 days of receipt. Click here to Contact Us.

Journals: All subscriptions and single-issue journal purchases are final. Please click here for more information about Journals Subscriptions.

*Refunds and exchanges apply to saleable merchandise purchased directly from UH Press. We will not be held responsible for UH Press merchandise purchased from third party bookstores or websites. UH Press promotional items have no cash or exchange value.

For booksellers

Booksellers must request permission to return books, tapes, maps, etc. in writing via mail, fax, or email. Upon approval, a written return authorization from the University of Hawai‘i Press (UH Press) will be sent to the Bookseller.

Returns are accepted only for items ordered directly from UH Press not less than 3 months or more than 12 months from the date of original shipment, and must be in clean and re-saleable condition. Out-of-print titles and books that are no longer distributed by UH Press are not eligible for return.

Bookseller’s return request must include the following information:

  • Correct invoice number(s) or invoice copy
  • Return reference number

Please include a copy of the return authorization with your returns. Books must be packaged properly to prevent damage while in-transit. No credit will be given for books with price-stickers, water damage, marks, or other shelf-worn damage.

Booksellers must report shortages or damaged books within 30 days (domestic) or 90 days (international) to receive full credit. When reporting a shortage, please indicate the number of copies shorted; replacement copies will be shipped. Reports received after 30 days (domestic) or 90 days (international) may be subject to a late processing fee equal to 30% of the publisher’s retail value.


SHIPPING POLICIES

Books: All book orders are shipped within 3 business days via the US Postal Service or similar service.*

Orders shipped to the United States and U.S. Territories are sent via either USPS Media Mail (delivery: 5-9 business days) or USPS Priority Mail (delivery: 3-5 business days). International orders are shipped via International Airmail (delivery: 1-3 weeks). Telephone number is required for international and expedited orders.

RIGHTS AND PERMISSIONS POLICIES

Before contacting us for permission to use material from our publications, please first verify that rights to the material do indeed belong to the University of Hawai‘i Press (the notes, acknowledgement section, captions, or copyright page may contain credit information pointing to a copyright holder elsewhere). If the material is credited to a source other than the University of Hawai‘i Press, please address your request there. TRANSLATION RIGHTS POLICY

UH Press is happy to consider requests for translation rights. Generally, we are not able to grant rights to individual translators, and require that translators find a publisher before we can enter into a license agreement. If you are a publisher interested in translation rights, please fill out our Translation Rights Requests Form


EXAMINATION COPY POLICY

Instructors may request up to three UH Press titles each term. Please mail or fax your request on your department letterhead specifying the title of your course, your expected enrollment, and the semester or quarter in which the course will be offered. A shipping & handling payment of $7.00 per copy for books with a retail price of $35.00 or less is required. Outside the U.S., this fee is $15.00 per copy. Examination copies priced at more than $35.00 are available at a 20% discount off the retail price and include free shipping worldwide. All examination copies are nonreturnable and are mailed via USPS Media Mail. All fees may be paid by VISA, MasterCard, check, or money order.

DESK COPY POLICY

After a UH Press title has been adopted for course use and we receive your bookstore order for 10 or more copies, a complimentary desk copy is available. Requests must be submitted on departmental letterhead or on a standard AAP, NACS, or similar form and include the author, book title, course name and number, course term, date classes start, estimated enrollment, and the name and phone number of the bookstore that has placed the order. The name of the instructor, address, and contact information should be clearly stated. If the instructor has received an examination copy, this copy shall serve as their desk copy. An instructor may request a replacement desk copy once every two years. To expedite approval, please enclose a copy of your department’s order to your campus bookstore. Please note that orders of used copies do not qualify toward approval of a desk copy. All desk copies are sent via USPS Media Mail.

DONATION REQUEST POLICY

University of Hawai‘i Press will consider donation requests from organizations that contribute to the dissemination of scholarship, promote academic freedom, support student advancement, and/or benefit Hawaiian ways of learning.

Please provide the following information on official letterhead with your request:

  •      A brief description of the organization and its mission or purpose
  •      If the donation is for an event, please provide the event name, date, intended audience, and estimated attendance
  •      The ISBN of the book(s) requested for donation, or a brief description and estimated quantity of items requested
  •      Details about how a UH Press donation will be recognized by the organization
  •      The contact information for the person in charge of collecting the donation
  •      The date the donation needs to be received, or any other deadlines

Donation requests require administrative approval, which may take 4-8 weeks for processing. Please allow sufficient time to process your donation request.

Requests must be on official letterhead and accompanied by an e-mail address.

ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY POLICY

University of Hawai‘i Press is committed to environmentally responsible publishing. Whenever feasible, our books and journals are printed on chlorine-free paper, and we are moving toward the use of recycled papers with at least 30% post-consumer content. Our production and design staff employ strategies aimed at reducing paper consumption during book manufacture, and the entire Press participates in our university-wide recycling program.

WHAT INFORMATION DO WE COLLECT?

University of Hawaiʻi Press collects the information that you provide when you register on our site, place an order, subscribe to our newsletter, or fill out a form. When ordering or registering on our site, as appropriate, you may be asked to enter your: name, e-mail address, mailing 0address, phone number or credit card information. You may, however, visit our site anonymously.

To process transactions

Your information, whether public or private, will not be sold, exchanged, transferred, or given to any other company for any reason whatsoever, without your consent, other than for the express purpose of delivering the purchased product or service requested. Order information will be retained for six months to allow us to research if there is a problem with an order. To administer a contest, promotion, survey or other site feature

Your information, whether public or private, will not be sold, exchanged, transferred, or given to any other company for any reason whatsoever, without your consent, other than for the express purpose of delivering the service requested. To send periodic emails

The email address you provide for order processing, may be used to send you information and updates pertaining to your order, in addition to receiving occasional company news, updates, related product or service information, etc.
Note: We keep your email information on file if you opt into our email newsletter. If at any time you would like to unsubscribe from receiving future emails, we include detailed unsubscribe instructions at the bottom of each email.

To send catalogs and other marketing material

The physical address you provide by filling out our contact form and requesting a catalog or joining our physical mailing list may be used to send you information and updates on the Press. HOW DO WE PROTECT YOUR INFORMATION?

We implement a variety of security measures to maintain the safety of your personal information when you place an order or enter, submit, or access your personal information.
We offer the use of a secure server. All supplied sensitive/credit information is transmitted via Secure Socket Layer (SSL) technology and then encrypted into our payment gateway providers database only to be accessible by those authorized with special access rights to such systems, and are required to keep the information confidential. After a transaction, your private information (credit cards, social security numbers, financials, etc.) will not be stored on our servers.
Some services on this website require us to collect personal information from you. To comply with Data Protection Regulations, we have a duty to tell you how we store the information we collect and how it is used. Any information you do submit will be stored securely and will never be passed on or sold to any third party.
You should be aware, however, that access to web pages will generally create log entries in the systems of your ISP or network service provider.
