Our History

More than 70 Years of Publishing

A colleague once told me that for many scholars, University of Hawai‘i Press is what comes to mind when they think of the University of Hawai‘i.

We’re proud of that relationship.

During the nearly 75 years since our founding in 1947, we can proudly say that we’ve circulated more than 10 million copies of books with “Hawai’i” on their spine into the hands of readers across the world. We also stand aligned with University of Hawai‘i objectives in our acquisition of books and journals that support new scholarship, enhance student success, and nurture Native Hawaiian ways of learning.

Furthermore, as a self-supporting operation, we continue to search for ways to be more innovative and sustainable. That includes expanding our electronic resources for the classroom and scholarly research, as well as partnering with organizations that benefit from our expertise and regional influence.

On this website you may read more about UH Press’s mission and what we publish, as well as browse our extensive books, journals, and online resources. You may also join our email list to receive UH Press updates, download a catalog, or support the Press through a tax-deductible donation.

Contact us to let us know what UH Press means to you or how we might serve your part of the world better. We love to hear from you, our readers.

And we will continue to produce works of scholarly merit, thereby making a good name for Hawai‘i—the place we call home.
